Written for Spintunes 2 Round 3 as a shadow, the challenge this time was "Secondary Historical Figures".
lyrics
Candle in the Dark
We hold these truths to be self evident
But before a child can know the truth, he has to learn the way
The way to shape and form the letters
The way to know the fathers plan
He needs someone there to guide him
To become the best he can
For it takes a patient hand to form the man
She showed him how to hold the chalk and slate
Used a Bible and a hornbook to teach values writ in stone
She taught virtue with those letters
Printed faith upon his heart
And a reverence for liberty
And justice got its start
Formed the course of a new nation with her art
It only takes a spark to light a candle in the dark
A single light can help to show the way
That small flame in turn
Helped the brushfires to burn-
Set by determined men
Whose dream still lives on today
She taught him as he grew to use a pen
And to use his mind as well to build upon the base she laid
As grammar led to logic
He learned how to speak and act
Arithmetic, geometry
Each had their impact
And were used to form the nations great compact
She never knew just where her actions led
That the child she taught to read and write
Would someday lead her land
She just gave him love of learning
Love of God and liberty
She set his feet upon a path
That stands in history
And the Constitution is her legacy
It only takes a spark to light a candle in the dark
A single light can help to show the way
That small flame in turn
Helped the brushfires to burn-
Set by determined men
Whose dream still lives on today
