Game Changer
By JoAnn Abbott
Feb 2014
The rules were clear that day in school-
An essay contest
Fire safety was the topic
I did my very best!
Winners got a ride on the great big truck
A tour of the firehouse, and sliding down the pole
The winners were announced and I couldn’t believe it
The firemen liked MINE the most!
So they called me up to get my prize
When my teacher said “Wait”
“Her handwriting isn’t neat enough
I think this boy should win”
So with teary eyes, and trembling chin
I had to sit down at my desk again.
In front of everyone- I couldn’t believe it
When did penmanship become the goal?
I trusted in the rules and tried
But she changed them
I did what I was told, but fell
When the goal was moved
Why should I try
Why should I trust
When I get dropped into the dust
Why should I live
Why should I give a damn when
I don’t know
If what I’m trusting in can go
At any time.
