about
Written a while back for the spintunes 3.4 competition. We were to write a song based on a photo of a rusty old abandoned car in the woods. In my mind, it turned into the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood...

Tempted
By JoAnn Abbott
July 29 2011
Through the leaves you see it- a sudden flash of grey
You wonder what it is and so you pause along the way
Something sits there waiting, sleek and hard and cold
Better just keep moving as you were told
But it whispers and calls “why not come here and touch me?
It isn’t all that far from the path you’re on-“
A couple of steps are all it takes, to be there by its side
A safe little spot where you can rest and hide
So you take just a few steps- what can be the harm?
The leaves are thick and healthy; the sun is bright and warm
Eyes like shining metal, shattered glass-like teeth
Pools of dried blood rust lie underneath
Is it safe to approach or is it only sleeping?
Is it waiting until you’re too close to get away?
You trip on the ivy underfoot, and try not to fall down
It cuts you and smiles as blood flows on the ground
And didn’t your mother ever tell you, you should not go from the path?
Didn’t she warn you of the dangers- or did you roll your eyes and laugh?
There are things you shouldn’t touch
And things you shouldn’t try
If you’re lucky they’ll just make you bleed and cry
If you’re lucky they’ll just make you bleed and cry
Stop and rest a moment- try to stop the blood
The gash is deep and jagged and it pours out like a flood
Try and find a bandage; go inside to see
Once you do you never will get free
Was it safe to approach or was it only sleeping?
It was waiting till you were too close to get away
The ivy so green was poison, and you’re starting to fall down
It cut you and smiled the grey beast on the ground
And didn’t your mother ever tell you, you should not go from the path?
Didn’t she warn you of the dangers- or did you roll your eyes and laugh?
There are things you shouldn’t touch
And things you shouldn’t try
If you’re lucky they’ll just make you bleed and cry
And if you aren’t lucky….say good bye
